After spending his early childhood in New York, Simon, along with his family, moved to London when he was ten. Since childhood, he has been devoted to philanthropy and made his first donation when he was just thirteen. In an interview, while talking about his first donation, he said,

I was about 13 and it was around Christmas.

I had £10 to spend and I was walking through Brighton.
