Biography of Gabby Douglas
Gabrielle Christina Victoria 'Gabby' Douglas was born in 1995 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
She grew up in a Christian family and was encouraged by her older sister, Arielle, to pursue gymnastics. At the age of 8, Gabby won her first gold medal at the Virginia State Championships.
Gabby's first coach was Dena Walker, but at the age of 14, she began training with Liang Chow in West Des Moines, Iowa.
Gabby had to switch to homeschooling in order to accommodate her rigorous training schedule. Despite her success, her previous coach, Dena Walker, claimed that Gabby could have won the Olympics even if she had stayed in Virginia.
In 2011, Gabby won gold medals at the Jesolo and Tokyo World Championships, both in the team competition.
She also placed third on balance beam and seventh in the all-around at the U.S. Championships.
